Abstract

Traditional jamu is an Indonesian cultural heritage with significant potential as a source of natural-based medicine. This study aims to comprehensively analyze the composition, benefits, and mechanisms of action of active compounds in traditional jamu based on recent scientific literature. The method used is a literature review with a qualitative descriptive approach, analyzing various scientific sources published between 2021 and 2025 and supported by recent reference books. The results indicate that jamu contains various active compounds, including flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, polyphenols, saponins, and tannins, which exhibit pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory effects. The mechanisms of action of these active compounds are multi-target and involve multiple biological pathways, resulting in synergistic therapeutic effects. In addition, natural ingredients in jamu contain nutrients that contribute to complex biological interactions. However, the development of jamu still faces challenges related to standardization, safety, and scientific validation. Therefore, further studies are required to support the development of jamu as a standardized and evidence-based health product.
